Deborah DeSnoo, Director/Producer

FILMOGRAPHY
Based in Japan, Deborah DeSnoo commuted on a tri-weekly basis between her LA office and her Tokyo office while working on several international endeavors with Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Korea, France, and Canada. A multi-media performance artist and award- winning American film and theater director/ producer, writer and narrator, she produces, directs and writes critically acclaimed films and videos and has produced events for Parco and the Japanese Government
.
History:
DeSnoo began her career as an actor/director in NYC. Her first trip to Japan was during her Senior year at NYU in order to spend 3 months studying Classical Japanese Dance. She returned in 1984 to study Noh with the world-famous Noh actor, Kanze Hideo. In 1985, TBS produced 我が愛東京 / I Love Tokyo, a one hour documentary featuring DeSnoo and Kanze Hideo. Working as an actress and theater director for a number of Japanese theater companies, DeSnoo holds the distinction of being the first foreign director invited to join Japan Directors’ Association.

She began working in film as second unit director and producer-in-Japan with Producer/ Director Lesli Linka Glatter for “TALES OF MEETING AND PARTINGS” , a short film that was nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD IN 1985.

Honored with a fellowship from the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, in 1994 DeSnoo produced, directed, and wrote CORPORATE WARRIOR, a short film on interracial marriage which has been screened worldwide and featured in a special report on NHK World News DeSnoo entered the international documentary scene when she partnered
with award winning film maker, Lyn Goldfarb to co-produce, co-direct and co- write JAPAN: MEMOIRS OF A SECRET EMPIRE, a three-part film series for PBS.

In 2006-2010 she partnered with NHK producer Takahiro Hamano to write, produce and direct SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET / 異界百物語. a cross platform documentary / drama production which explores the history of Japan`s supernatural culture and its influence on the genre of J-Horror. The International version was broadcast in April of 2010 and was chosen as one of NHK’s 10 best documentaries of the year.

established in 1965 to contribute to the development of the performing
arts. It has managed performers’ neighboring rights collectively as well
as promoting a variety of performing arts activities based on three
concept; making an arrangement for enriching a cycle of creation,
cultivating bearers of the future of performing arts, and creating chances
for developing performing arts.

DIRECTOR
In October 2019, DeSnoo also directed a short film on Japan’s first
female photojournalist, Tsuneko Sasamoto for the National Gallery of Art,
Washington that will be part of an exhibition entitled THE NEW WOMEN
BEHIND THE CAMERA. The exhibition is scheduled to be presented at
the National Gallery from September 20, 2020 to January 31, 2021 and
at the Metropolitan Museumof Art from March 15 to July 18 th , 2021.
